Aughadreenagh

Aghadrinagh (Patent of) A. Saunderson Esqr. In the centre of the parish on the Mail Coach road from Cavan to Dublin, about (?) statute miles from the former place and 2 from Lavey townland. Landlord is Robert Saunderson Esqr. of Altbagh Cottage, parish of Larah. Holdings are from 2 to 245 acres; leases at will, 21 years or life; rents are from 10s. to 21s. per Irish acre. Soil-?some light and stony; some good clay soil. There are three looms in the townland one of which only is in operation.

Behey

On the East boundary of the parish and on the Mail Coach road to Dublin from Cavan, (?) miles from latter place, and 1 mile from Lavey townland. Proprietor is Robt. Saunderson Esqr. and holdings are from 2 1/2 to 20 acres; rents are from 8s. to 22s. Soil-?good light soil inclined to clay, some stony and very rocky towards the South. 1 Tuck mill and 1 cloth press in this townland.

Bogesky

In the South East extremity of the parish and about 6 statute miles from Ballyjamesduff. Proprietor is Mr. Willm. Little, near Red Hills, Co. Cavan. It is situated in a very retired district and although the population is very numerous not a house has a road to communicate with it and the townland is not crossed by any road or lane. Its general altitude is high and the soil is light and stony but very capable of improvements.

Cargagh

Proprietor is Major Burrows of Stradone.

Carricknaveddan

In the South West of the parish, 2 1/2 miles from Lavey townland. On the mail coach road from Cavan to Dublin. Proprietor is Revd. Willm. Annesley. It is leased for 999 years to the Messrs. Smith who reside on the land. Moher, Killagrogan and Carricknavedden are leased to Matthew, Edmund, Patrick and Philip Smith at a bulk rent of £123, agent's fees included. Soil is a good light stony soil and the surface is gentle and undulating, not very hilly. Mr. Smith who resides on the land holds 40 acres in his own hands. The remainder is sublet to one tenant who has a lease of 21 years. Barley is grown in the townland.

Corragho

In the centre of the parish on the West side of and close to the Mail Coach road from Cavan to Dublin. It is bounded on the North by Lavey Lough. Proprietor is Revd. Stewart Smith of Cavan who holds it on a lease renewable for ever from Alex Saunderson Esqr. of Castlesaunderson at £16 8s. yearly. Holdings are from 8 to 15 acres Irish. Leases are for 2 lives or 21 years. Rents are from 17s to 20s per Irish acre. Soil is good clay soil which produces oats, flax and potatoes. Surface is gently undulating.

Corrawillin

Sometimes called Mill Lavey. Proprietor is Mr. Wm. Burrowes. Held under the Bishop of Kilmore on a lease of 21 years renewable for ever and sublet to 19 occupying tenants on leases of 21 years, at 25s per acre. Co. Cess is from 57d to 87d per acre annually and tithes have been withheld these three years. The soil is rocky. Bog is scarce and the usual crops are oats, potatoes and flax. The old ruins of a church built by Saint Daffeny is used as a station by Roman Catholics for prayers. It is attended by many people in the Summer season from all parts of Ireland and some from England.

Corracara

Proprietor is Alexander Saunderson Esqr. Corracara and Droman are supplied with turbary from Lattacloghan. Mr. Saunderson allows his tenants fairly and generously for buildings giving from 3 to 5 £. for building houses together with as much timber as they require for roofing from Castle Saunderson. Holdings are from 5 to 16 acres and leases for (?) lives only. There are two tenants at will. Soil is clay with some stone. Oats, flax and potatoes are grown. The Co. Cess is from 8d to 10d per acre. Rents are from 13s. to 20/6 per Irish acre. No land is sublet.

Cuttragh

Proprietor is Tisdall Esqr. and the agent is Mr. Thomas Berry of No. 4 Hume Street, Dublin. It is let to 14 occupying tenants at a rent of from 13s. to £1 per acre. Tenantry are 13 Roman Catholics and one Protestant.

Derryglen

Proprietor is Tisdal Esqr. and Lady Tullamore. It is let to 20 occupying tenants at will at from 9s. to 13s. per acre. The soil is rocky producing oats, potatoes and flax. Tenantry are all Roman Catholic. There is no bog.

Drumhillagh

Proprietor is TisdalEsqr. The land is let to seven occupying tenants on a lease of 2 lives at 16s. per acre. Tithes are withheld at present. The soil is part clay and part gravelly. The usual crops are oats, potatoes and flax and there is a sufficiency of bog.

Drumhirk

Proprietor is R. Saunderson Esqr. It is let to 3 occupying tenants principally at will. The size of the farms is from 3 to 13 acres. Good clay soil. Mr. Saunderson allows subdivisions.

Drumgora

Proprietor is Dean Annesly Smith and Co. (No further information is given.

Drumestagh

Proprietor is A. Saunderson Esqr. This is a subdenomination of Stravicknaboe. Farms are from 8 to 18 Irish acres and leases are for lives. One tenant holds his land yearly. Rent is 17s. to 20s. per Irish acre. Co. Cess is 9d to 10d per Irish acre. Crops are oats, flax and potatoes. Lime is obtained from Daly's Bridge.

Drummanduff

Proprietor is Alex Saunderson Esqr. Dromanduff and Dromanbawn were both included under the head of Droman in the Patent. Crops are oats, flax and potatoes. No wheat is grown in the parish. Holdings are from 5 to 22 Irish acres. Soil is a stony clay. Co. Cess per Irish acre is 4d to 5d. per annum. Proprietor now gives leases of 21 years or one life. There are some old leases in the townland. Others are holdings at will. Rents are from 10s. to 14s. per acre and some land is sublet at 25s. per Irish acre.

Drummanbane

Proprietor is A. Saunderson. Dromanduff and Dromanbawn are both included under the head of Droman in the Patent.

Drumnaveagh

Proprietor is Lord Annesly. Mr. Maguire is the agent. The rent is from 14s. to 17s. per Irish acres. 8 acres is the smallest and 24 acres the largest farm. Soil is light loamy. Oats, flax and potatoes are grown. Lime is got from Daly's Bridge. There are 2 looms in the townland, for frieze and linen.

Feaugh

Proprietor is Captn. Atkins from near Newry. Bishop land renewable for ever. It is let to 11 occupying tenants at will for 25s. per acre. Soil is clay producing oats, potatoes and flax. There is no turbary. Tenantry are all Roman Catholics. The agent is Mr. Thos. Hartley.

Greaghnagee

Landlord is James Saunderson Esqr. of Cloverhill. Soil is clay with stones and is good if treated with lime. Mr. J. Saunderson gives timber for roofing. There is one holding of 18 acres at 28/- per Irish acre let for 1 life, to Hugh Riley (sic) of Moher who pays 1 guinea to Mr. Saunderson. Food is a little stirabout and potatoes with milk and a little butter. Meat is used at Easter and Christmas.

Gortnakillew

Proprietor is Tisdal Esqr. There is a portion of bog in the South of this townland between 15 and 20 feet deep. The timber in it is principally oak blocks about 5 feet in circumference. In the West end of this bog there is a mass of rocks. The soil is light and gravelly. It is let to 16 occupying tenants at will at from £1-1-7 to £1-4-0 per acre. Co. Cess is 1s. to 1/3 per acre annually. Tithes are withheld. Soil is wet clay producing oats, potatoes and flax. The tenantry are all Roman Catholics.

Grellagh

Proprietor is Alex Saunderson and Lady Tullamore. It is let to 24 occupying tenants for a lease of one life at a yearly rent of from 15s. to 30s. per acre. Co. Cess is from is 4d to 2s per acre annually and tithes are withheld since 1832 (4 years). Soil is gravelly producing oats, potatoes and flax. There is no bog. There is a school in this townland in the old Chapel which has 60 scholars, 40 boys and 20 girls. There are 9 Protestants and 31 Roman Catholics who pay the teacher from 1/3 to 3/- per quarter.

Killyconnon

Proprietor is Mr. Wm. Burrowes. Ground from the Crown in Fee Simple and let to 14 occupying tenants some having a lease of lives and others for a term of years at 21s. per acre. Co. Cess is from 1s to 1/2 per acre annually and tithes are withheld. Bog is scarce.

Killygrogan

Proprietor is Dean Annesly and Smith & Co. It is let and sublet to 20 occupying tenants some having leases for 20, and others for 18 years at a rent varying from 15s. to 30s. per acre, chargeable with Co. Cess from 5d to 1/4 per acre annually. Tithes are withheld these 3 years. Soil is light and gravelly. The usual crops are oats, potatoes and flax. Bog plenty but limestone none and it is brought from the parish of Larah to this townland at 5p per load.

Kilnavar

Proprietor is Tisdall (Tindall in MS. L. O. C.) Esqr. The soil is of a light yellow clay. The townland is tolerably well supplied with turf from its N.W. extremity. There is a small lough in its North side called Gortnakillah Lough. There is no school in this townland. It is let to 12 occupying tenants some having leases of lives and others at will at a rent of from 15s. to 20s. per acre. Co. Cess is 1s. per acre annually. Tithes are withheld. Bog plenty. The usual crops are oats, potatoes and flax. Tenantry are all Roman Catholics.

Knockanorke

Proprietor is Major Burrowes. It is held in Fee Simple. Rents are from 24/- to 30/- per acre. Holdings are from 3 to 28 acres. Good clay soil and it is considered very good land. The usual crops are oats, flax and potatoes. Plenty of manure is used. Leases are generally for 3 lives or 31 years.

Knocknagilla

The landlords are Smith & Co. and Dean Annesley.

Lateever

Proprietor is Tisdall Esqr. The average rent is £1 per acre. The soil is light and shallow and about one third of it is rough and rocky pasture. The usual crops are oats, potatoes and flax. This townland is plentifully supplied with spring wells. The land is held by 12 occupying tenants at will, all Roman Catholics, for a rent per acre of 15s. to 24s. Co. Cess is from 1s 8d to 2/9 per acre annually. Tithes have not been paid these 3 years.

Lattagloghan

Proprietor is Alexander Saunderson Esqr. It is divided into Upper and Lower, Upper to James, Lower to Alex. Farms are from 4 to 54 acres held for 3 lives or 31 years. There is a corn mill and kiln in this townland; the supply of water depends on a race overshot, 12 ft. by 2 ft. The leases he gives now are for 1 life.

Lavey

Bishop's land. Proprietor is Bishop of Kilmore and middleman is Captn. Atkins. It is let to 33 occupying tenants at rents of from 28s. to 29/6. In Lavey Lough there are two small islands, the property of James Smith, shopkeeper, of the town of Cavan. The remains of the old church of Lavey are still to be seen in this townland. There is a new church built in 1818 near the old one. In the South part of this townland, near Loughanlea (?) in the year 1835, there was part of a cot dug out of a bog about 15 feet deep. Its dimensions were 20 ft. by 3 ft. The remaining part of it is still in the bog and is supposed to be 20 feet more as it appears very fast in the bog.

Leiter

Proprietor is Mr. Wm. Burrowes. He gives leases for his own life from 25s to 30s per acre. There is a corn mill in this townland. Power is overshot. A little to the South of the mill is a large ash tree planted in the centre of a space formed by the junction of four roads. It is asserted that many years ago two persons had a difference relative as to which was the ablest marksman; one of them buried his own son to the neck in the ground, placed one egg on his head, retired to a certain distance and split the egg to pieces. He challenged the other to do likewise but he declined. He then planted the tree in the hole made for the boy's body. Others asserted that Oliver Cromwell reviewing his troops on a line stood here. (Note: I wonder are these stories still remembered in Lavey. L. O C.)

Lisaderg

Proprietor is Alexr. Saunderson Esqr. Mr. Saunderson allows all 80/- and timber for roofing and once he allowed 5d or 6d per perch for ditching. There is no subletting now. Holdings are from 6 1/2 to 19 acres with leases for his own life. The soil is clay with some stone. Co. Cess is 8d. to 10d. per Irish acre. Rents are £10.10 for 11 Irish acres. Surface is hilly.

Moher

Proprietors are Dean Annesley and Smith & Co. Part of the land is hilly. Soil is good and light. Rents are 13/9 per Irish acre with leases of 21 years. Subdivisions are very small.

Mullymagowan

Proprietors are Dean Annesley and Smith & Co. who set to the Smiths on a lease of 999 years, 5 Irish acres at 21/7, Irish money. Lime is got from Countenan near Stradone and is quarried at 1s. per ton at the quarry. Grey frieze is worn by the women. Four looms are employed weaving frieze. After the loom it is milled and then pressed and prepared. 6 1/2d per yd. is the charge for dressing and pressing and 3s. for milling drapery and pressing. 2/6 per diem is paid as wages. The frieze is sold, 5 eight to 6 eight wide at 3/6 per yard. (Note: "The Meentaghs of Mullymagawan" mentioned in the Inquisitions of James 1. Minteach a grassy patch between rocks. L. O C.) SCHRAUGH (Stravicknabo) Proprietor is Alexr. Saunderson Esqr. Holdings are from 5 to 44 acres Irish. Some tenants have no leases at all while those who have leases hold for their lives. Co. Cess is 4½d to 7 1/2 d per acre. Rent is 18s. to 20s. per acre. Soil is good clay with stones requiring only lime and manure to be made very productive. Surface is hilly.
