Lewis 1837
DENN, a parish, partly in the barony of CASTLERAHAN, and partly in that of CLONMAHON, but chiefly in the barony of UPPER LOUGHTEE, county of CAVAN, and province of Ulster, 5¼ miles (S. by E.) from Cavan, on the road to Ballyjamesduff; containing 5915 inhabitants. It comprises, according to the Ordnance survey, 11,6003¼ statute acres (including 125½ acres under water), of which 7774½ are in Upper Loughtee, 21l3¾ in Clonmahon, and 1712 in Castlerahan; 11,237 are applotted under the tithe act. Within the last few years, five townlands have been separated from it, forming, together with portions of three other parishes, the benefice and perpetual curacy of Ballyjamesduff. There are about 20 acres of woodland, and 500 of bog; the remainder is good arable and pasture land. In the northern part of the parish is the mountain of Slieve Glagh, 1050 feet above the level of the sea; and in the south-western part is that of Ardkilmore, 878 feet high. Fairs are held at Cross-keys, on Jan. 12th and March 17th, for general farming stock. The living is a vicarage, in the diocese of Kilmore, and in the patronage of the Bishop; the rectory is impropriate in the Marquess of Westmeath. The tithes amount to £375, of which £150 is payable, to the impropriator, and the remainder to the vicar. The glebe-house was erected by aid of a loan of £618 from the late Board of First Fruits, in 1817: the glebe comprises 151 acres. The church, a neat small edifice, was rebuilt by aid of a loan of £600 from the same Board, in 1812. The R. C. parish is co-extensive with that of the Established Church; there are two chapels, one in the townland of Drumavaddey, and one at Cross-keys, both small buildings, and the latter old and dilapidated. In the parochial school are about 50 boys and 20 girls; and there are five pay schools, in which are about 220 boys and 70 girls.

Ardlougher
The property of Lord Farnham and Richard Stephens Esqr. It is divided by a
straight bank running from North to South. the Western portion belonging to Lord Farnham. and the Eastern portion to Mr. Stephens. The portion belonging to Lord. Farnham is let to 12 occupying tenants ten of whom are living on the lease and 3 cotters. The rent is f I per acre. Tithes are per acre. 8d. Co. Cess is 2/- per acre annually. The portion belonging to Mr. Stephens is let to 13 occupying tenants at will in farms from 3 1/2 acres to 2 acres. Rent is from £1 to 25s. per acre. Co. Cess by the Carvagh is 2s. per acre. Tithes are 1s. per acre annually. Turbary is scarce. Tenantry are 82 in number. all Roman Catholics. The children of this townland attend Killycannon (?) school. There are 3 ancient forts in this townland.
Banagher
Property of Mr. Richardson. The agent is G. Knipe. Esqr. The yearly rent per acre
being most disproportionate varying from 6s. 6d. to 26s. It is under the Tithe Comp. Act. The principal religion is the Roman Catholic. There are two circles in the townland slightly raised about 2 feet above the level of the ground. The most Westward is about 1 chain in diameter, the other 2. There is a fort now converted into a garden near the larger circle. In the centre of the larger circle is a small eminence on which stands the remains of a Druid's altar. About 10 chains distant is another of those altars. Some say that these circles are burying grounds but from the Hill being nothing more than huge rock appearing in many places above the surface and the greatest depth of soil only 8 inches this completely does away with the assertion.
Carrickaboy
Church land. It is let to yearly tenants at an average rate of 23s. per acre. Soil in
general is good and the usual crops are oats, potatoes and flax. The church is at present in ruins; the South side has fallen down and from the fragments that remain it is supposed it had been originally in a great measure built of Grouten (?). The only stairs (?) of any size are quoins. It appears to have been constructed very simply and was calculated to have contained about 200 persons. This townland abounds with antiquities each of which has its own peculiar legend.
Carrickaboy (Glebe)
The property of the Bishop of Kilmore and let to 12 occupying tenants at will at
from 20s. to 30s. per acre with County Cess at 2s 1d. per acre annually and Tithes by valuation. Soil is rocky producing oats and flax. Tenantry are 3 Protestants and 9 Roman Catholics. There is a Saints Grave here called Relic Tanin or the Flags (?) of Denn. If any person wishes to do another injury he makes a hole in the ground and puts a piece of silver coin into it and turns the flags, says a few prayers and then whatever injury he wishes should befall the other person. There are 3 Stations here for saying prayers at.
Carrickatober
Property of James O'Reilly Esqr. of Beltrasna, of Co.Meath.
Carn
Property of James O'Reilly Esqr. of Beltrasna, Co. Meath.
Cornaseer
The property of Lord Farnham and is let to 8 occupying tenants on leases of 3 lives
or 31 years. at a rent of from 15 to 25s. per acre. It is chargeable with Co. Cess by the carvagh, from 1s. 8d. to 2s. per acre and tithes 6d. per acre annually. Inhabitants are 12 Protestants and 52 Roman Catholics. The usual crops are oats, potatoes and flax. The only object of curiosity is what the peasantry call Clough Ghrana or Grana's stone said to have been the place where Diarmud and Grana used to sleep at night. The most probable conjecture is that it was a Druidical altar in former days. It is said to have been surrounded by a circle of stones with their ends fastened in the ground but more state that it is the Grave of Giants or some ancient Irish heroes of whom such extraordinary facts are related by the Irish peasantry. The children of this townland attend school in the townland of Kollycannor.
Corraweelis
The property of the Rev Mr. Storey the Glebe land of Annagelliff Parish. Soil is
very bad taking in a large portion of Slieveglagh Mountain which is very rocky, uncultivated ground. The farms are from 6 to 11 acres and produce oats and potatoes. There are 30 tenants. Rent is from 13s. to 17s. per acre with no lease. Co. Cess is 2s. 2d. per acre and tithes are from 4d. to 10d. per acre, yearly. Fuel is scarce. Tenantry are all Roman Catholics.
