Search by Name

You can now do a name search across all datasets – 4 censuses, plus Tithe Applotment Books, plus Griffith’s Valuation. This search facility has advantages over the National Archive method because –

• Records have been correctly linked to existing townlands and parishes, thus avoiding the many transcription errors in the parish and townland names
• The use of the * wildcard greatly improves the accuracy of name searches
• A single search can be applied to all datasets at once

The * wildcard can be used to replace a sequence of zero or more letters inside a name. For example, the surname, Reilly, has many different spellings in the National Archive data – Reilly, Rielly, Riley, Reily, etc. If you enter r*l*y in the surname box, it will find all the records whose surname begins with ‘r’, have ‘l’ in the middle and end with ‘y’.

After entering the search text in the Surname field, tab to or click on another field, and the system will calculate the number of records that satisfy the filter criteria and display this number on the Search button. Continue to apply filters until the number of records goes below 1,000. When this happens, you will be able to submit the search request and all matching records will be displayed in the grid below.

Click on a row and the townland location will be shown as a red dot on the map. Click on the icon to display all members of the same household in the grid below.

Within the household data, click on the icon to see the original image from National Archives.
